Preview: Terengganu v JDT

The final circuit of the MPFL 2026 regular season gets under way in Selangor on Saturday, and Terengganu's meeting with JDT carries plenty riding on it for both sides. JDT go into the match in second place on 34 points, level with Pahang Rangers but ahead on goal difference, and knowing a win over Mohd Shafily Bin Jusoh's Terengganu would go a long way to confirming the automatic semi-final spot behind Selangor, who cannot now be caught at the top after their 6-3 win over JDT in Pasir Gudang.

Joao Almeida's side responded to that defeat in the best possible way, thrashing ATM 9-0 on the final day of Circuit 8, Andresito completing a hat-trick and Bukhairi Samsudin among the scorers. With two matches of the regular season remaining, JDT have the chance to pull clear of Pahang, who have just one match left to play, in the race for second and a bye straight into the semi-finals.

Terengganu arrive in fine form of their own, having won back-to-back matches in the same circuit for the first time this season, beating PFA Odin Sarawak 9-3 before seeing off KL City 5-1. Alif Mat Amin has been the driving force behind that run, four goals in each of those matches taking him to 21 for the season, the third highest tally in the league behind Felipe De Souza and Marlon. Terengganu sit fifth on 20 points, three behind fourth-placed KL City, who have a game in hand, and a win here would pile the pressure on KL City to respond in their own final match, against Selangor.

The two sides have met once already this season, JDT edging a five-goal thriller 5-3 back in Circuit 2, Alcantara and Muhamad Norakmal on target either side of two Terengganu replies. Terengganu will hope for a better account of themselves this time, with Syed Shahrul Niezam, named MVP in Sunday's win over KL City, pulling the strings alongside the prolific Alif Mat Amin.

With the top six places below Selangor and JDT still to be settled, both sides have plenty to play for beyond pride. A Terengganu win would keep alive their hopes of overhauling KL City for fourth spot, while for JDT, three points would take them a big step closer to confirming second place and a far more favourable route through the play-offs.

JDT led that Circuit 2 meeting 4-0 inside 17 minutes before Terengganu pulled three goals back, a reminder of the visitors' capacity to punish a slow finish. It is a trait Terengganu have carried into this circuit, both of their wins in Circuit 8 built on fast starts and sustained pressure rather than a single moment of quality, and one JDT will be wary of allowing to develop a second time.

Kick-off in Selangor is part of a bumper opening day to Circuit 9, with Wipers hosting Pahang Rangers, ATM facing USM in a straight fight for sixth spot, and hosts Selangor entertaining PFA Odin Sarawak later in the day.
