As the dust settles on Circuit 8 of the 2026 MPFL, Selangor can reflect on what’s been a near flawless season.

In previous season’s they would have been crowned champions having gone 14 games unbeaten and broken the stranglehold of Johor Darul Ta’zim who had won the previous two editions.

Edgar Baldasso, who will celebrate four years at the club in November has slowly built a squad that has matured under his guidance, the addition of World Cup winner Marlon seems to have been the catalyst for this season’s amazing campaign.

He joined fellow Brazilian Evandro Borges who made an immediate impact on his arrival in early 2025 and between them they have built the backbone of a title winning side.

The numbers are impressive, fourteen games, fourteen wins has given them 42 points a new record. JDT won the two previous fourteen game season’s with 39 points. Add to that 111 goals scored, the first time a team has passed the century mark (JDT did also pass 100 on matchday two of circuit 8 with a 9-0 win over ATM)

Marlon is their top scorer with 30 goals, and he doesn’t just score tap-ins, and audacious backheel in the win over JDT in their last match emphasised what a brilliant addition he has been to the squad.

While he is their top scorer, its two Malaysian’s one at each end of their careers that have also added plenty of goals, 20-year old Syahir Iqbal with sixteen goals has matured further into a quality player with season, and 38-year old captain Khairul Effendy has led by example but also is into double figures for the season.

In fact, Marlon, Syahir, Effendy and Evandro have contributed 71 of their 11 goals so far.

But at the other end of the court as well there has been a solid last line of defence with only 22 goals conceded giving them an astonishing goal difference of +89.

Goalkeeper Syaifuddin Syukri made several fine saves against JDT in circuit 8 to frustrate the defending champions.

With two games to go in the regular season against PFA Odin and KL City, Selangor get to finish the campaign in front of their home supporters. They will be desperate to go through the season with a 100% record and take momentum into the play-offs.

Finishing first seems them straight into the semi-finals but Baldasso will be under no illusions they will have to continue to be at their best if they want MPFL silverware at the end of the season to add to last season’s Malaysia Futsal Cup.
