Syahir Iqbal Khan Akbar Khan Making a Massive Contribution to Selangor's Perfect Start
Twenty years old and only four seasons into professional futsal, Syahir Iqbal Khan Akbar Khan has become the outstanding Malaysian in the MPFL and the player who decides the big matches for Selangor.

There is a moment in the Circuit 3 win over JDT that captures Syahir Iqbal Khan Akbar Khan better than any statistic. Selangor lead 3-2, the defending champions pressing for an equaliser, and it is Syahir, twenty years old, playing only his fourth season of professional futsal, who drives forward, takes the ball under pressure in midfield and fires in the goal that makes it 4-2. Not the flourish of a winger showing off. The decisive act of a player who understands exactly what the moment requires.
Born in Kota Bharu, Kelantan on 29 September 2005, Syahir came to futsal late by the standards of the game's elite. He was a schoolboy footballer at SMK Putera, a state sports school, when Kelantan's entry into the MPFL in 2022 brought him to the attention of coach Qusmaini Noor Rusli. Recognised as a natural talent at 17, Syahir was given his first exposure to professional futsal under Qusmaini's guidance. A year later, at 18, he made the move that would change everything: south to Shah Alam, and Selangor.
Under Edgar Baldasso, the Brazilian coach who has built Selangor into the MPFL's most complete side, Syahir has developed with a speed that has surprised even those who identified him early. Baldasso has spoken publicly about the young winger on several occasions, saying he hoped Syahir would remain at Selangor for twenty years. That is the language of a coach who has found something rare. Syahir, for his part, turned down offers from other Malaysian clubs and reportedly from clubs abroad, choosing instead to stay and develop. "I'm still young and I want to play first," he said at the time. "Money can wait."
The international stage came quickly. In 2023, under new national coach Rakphol Sainetngam, Syahir was called into the Malaysia squad for the AFC Futsal Asian Cup 2024 qualifiers in Fergana, Uzbekistan. He scored five goals across the qualifying campaign and followed that with two goals against Thailand and one against Afghanistan in friendly matches in Bangkok. At the AFF Futsal Championship 2024, he was one of Malaysia's most consistent performers. In September 2025, Syahir scored in the AFC Futsal Asian Cup 2026 qualifying group in Kuantan as Malaysia secured their place in the Asian finals in Jakarta, the first time in years the national side had reached that stage. Syahir was named best player of the Malaysia Futsal Cup 2025 final, scoring twice as Selangor thrashed Pahang Rangers 13-3.
The 2026 MPFL season has been his most complete yet. Nine goals, three MVP awards and three consecutive Team of the Circuit selections tell the headline story, but the detail is in how he has played. In the 7-0 win over Terengganu in Circuit 3, Syahir scored twice and was named MVP in a performance that prompted Baldasso to describe him as the most complete Malaysian futsal player he had worked with. In Circuit 4, his two goals against Pahang Rangers, the first a composed finish inside the opening five minutes to set the tone for a 5-3 win, underlined what he brings beyond the scoresheet: the ability to decide big matches.
At 20 years old, Syahir Iqbal Khan is Malaysia's most prominent futsal player, and a genuine candidate to become the standard-bearer for the sport in this country for the next decade. He still speaks of ambitions to play in Thailand or Indonesia, with Black Pearl in particular mentioned as a dream club, but for now the focus is on Selangor's title challenge in the MPFL 2026. The talent was always visible. What Syahir has added is the conviction to match it.
