It's a battle for supremacy as two old rivals go head to head again

Since the rebranding of the Malaysia Premier Futsal League to the MPFL, one of the biggest rivalries has been between Johor Darul Ta’zim and Selangor.

In the previous two seasons JDT finished top to take the title but were pressed all the way by their big rivals, winning by a six-point margin in 2024 and in 2025 just a three-point gap separated the sides.

In both seasons the winning points tally, in the 9-team league, was 39 points. Ironically, as the sides prepare to meet for the second time this season, Selangor go into the match on that same 39-point tally, knowing a win would set a new points record and guarantee them a top-of-the-table finish in the regular season.

The sides have always been involved in some epic battles with plenty of goals and incidents along the way.

The first meeting between the sides was in March 2024 when JDT ran out 4-2 winners in Pasir Gudang. Abu Haniffa opened the scoring, while two of JDT's foreigners, Garcia Rega Caio Cesar and Carneiro Neto Raimundo Helio, were also on the mark. Two players still forming an integral part of their set-up, Mohd Khairul and Syahir Iqbal, scored their goals.

The second meeting in 2024 was an even tighter affair with Selangor edging a 2-1 win. Syahir was on the mark once again, while Bruno Taffy scored the consolation for JDT.

In 2025, JDT met Selangor in their second match of the season and left Shah Alam with a 3-0 win. Mohamad Awalludin scored twice, and Syed Aizad Daniel Syed Nasir scored the other.

The highest-scoring and most thrilling match came in Pasir Gudang in July 2025, as Selangor left with a stunning 8-5 victory, inspired by four goals from Evandro Borges and two from Syahir Iqbal.

Selangor raced into a 3-0 lead before the JDT comeback. The scores were level at 5-5 with six minutes to go, but Selangor eased home to seal a thrilling victory in the highest-scoring match between the sides so far.

Fast forward to the current season, the sides met on matchday 2 of Circuit 3 in Shah Alam, and Selangor again came out on top with a 5-3 win to keep up their 100% start to the season.

Marlon, a hat-trick from Evandro Borges, and another goal from Syahir helped them to victory. Mohamad Awalludin, Mahadir Harahap, and Bruno Taffy scored for JDT, but it wasn't enough to prevent a first and only defeat in the 2026 season so far.

Expect more fireworks when these two meet in the final game of Circuit 8, matchday 1.
