Mid-Season Report: Terengganu

Terengganu came into 2026 with something to prove, and in Alif Mat Amin they have a match-winner who has kept them competitive. With eight points from seven games, the next five circuits are a chance to build something more substantial.

Terengganu came into 2026 with something to prove after back-to-back relegation play-offs in the old MPFL Division 1 structure. Mohd Shafily's side have been inconsistent, with heavy defeats to Selangor and Pahang weighing on their record, but there have been enough encouraging signs to suggest a side finding its footing at this level.

The 5-4 win over USM in Circuit 1, secured after Alif Mat Amin scored four goals including the winner, was the ideal start. A 9-1 win over Wipers in Circuit 4 was their most emphatic performance of the season. Alif Mat Amin has been outstanding across the campaign, with three MVP awards, two hat-tricks, and the kind of individual performances that have kept Terengganu competitive in matches they might otherwise have lost.

The difficulties have come against the stronger sides. A 7-0 defeat to Selangor in Circuit 3 and a 7-0 reverse to Pahang Rangers in Circuit 2 are the low points, and the 2-5 loss to KL City on the final day of Circuit 4 did little to ease concerns about their defensive record of 31 goals conceded in seven matches.

There is genuine talent here, though. Iqhmal Najmie has shown well in the wider midfield role, and Anwarullah and Shahrul Niezam have contributed meaningful goals. The draw against PFA Odin and their two wins point to a side that can compete across a full match when the structure holds. Eight points out of twenty-one is below where the club will want to be. The next five circuits are an opportunity to build something more substantial.
