Preview: Pahang Rangers V ATM

The other half of this weekend's play-off round looks considerably less even on paper. Pahang Rangers finished third in the MPFL 2026 regular season with 37 points from sixteen matches, twelve wins to their name and a goal difference of plus 63, while ATM scraped into sixth on 18 points, five wins and three draws offering only a modest return across the same sixteen games. The winner advances to a semi-final against JDT; the loser's season ends this weekend.

Pahang's season has been built on a strike partnership that has rarely gone quiet. Felipe De Souza and Rodrigo Da Silva have carried the bulk of the goalscoring load all year, and a squad finishing the regular season with a five-match run that included four wins gives them real momentum heading into the knockout stage. ATM's own form has been considerably more mixed, three defeats to open the final circuit followed by back-to-back wins to close it, a 5-4 victory over USM and a 2-1 win over Terengganu suggesting a side capable of raising its level when the situation demands it, even if the underlying numbers, a goal difference of minus 25 across the season, point to a squad that has more often struggled than not.

The head-to-head record offers little encouragement for ATM. Pahang won both meetings between the sides during the regular season, 6-1 on each occasion, results built substantially on the same attacking pairing that has fired Pahang to third place overall. ATM's season was also reshaped by a mid-season transfer window that saw leading scorer Muhammad Bukhairi Samsudin depart for JDT in exchange for national team player Danial Dain arriving on loan, a swap whose full effect on a knockout tie of this kind remains to be properly tested.

For ATM to reach a semi-final against JDT, they will need a performance considerably different from either meeting between these sides so far this season. For Pahang, a third win over the same opponent would be the least surprising outcome of the entire play-off round, and set up a semi-final against the only side to have taken anything at all off Selangor this year.
