Preview: KL City v Selangor

The MPFL 2026 regular season comes to a close in Selangor on Sunday, and there is a fitting symmetry to it ending with a meeting between the leaders and the club chasing the last of the coveted top-four spots. KL City host Selangor knowing victory would secure fourth place outright, while Edgar Baldasso's side arrive with the chance to complete the entire regular season with a 100% record.

Selangor have not lost, or even drawn, a single match all campaign, a run that reached 15 wins from 15 on Saturday with a 12-1 demolition of PFA Odin Sarawak, ten goals coming in a ruthless first half in Shah Alam. Marlon and Evandro Borges have led the way in front of goal throughout, and the same attacking cast that has torn apart most of the division this season, including a 7-2 win over KL City themselves earlier in the campaign, will fancy their chances of a 16th straight victory to send Selangor into the play-offs in the perfect state of mind.

KL City, though, have plenty riding on the result themselves. Jerry Dinesh Pireira's side sit fourth on 23 points from 15 matches, three points clear of Terengganu, who face ATM on the same afternoon and, like KL City, have one match left to complete their campaign. A draw here would already be enough to guarantee KL City fourth place outright, since even a Terengganu win in their own finale would leave them a point short. Only defeat, combined with a Terengganu victory, would leave anything still to be decided, in which case goal difference would come into play.

The sides met in Circuit 5, Selangor's 7-2 win a reminder of the gulf that has opened up between the division's best side and the chasing pack, though KL City have shown signs of life since, closing out Circuit 8 with a 5-1 win over Terengganu that helped secure their current standing. Muhammad Syahid Ajid Zainal Abidin, the matchwinner in a 3-2 defeat of ATM earlier in Circuit 8, and Daniel Felipede Almeida Domingues, on target in the loss to Terengganu, have carried much of KL City's attacking threat in recent weeks and will need to be at their sharpest against a Selangor defence that has conceded sparingly all season.

For Selangor, there is little left to prove in terms of the table, top spot in the regular season standings already a formality and the destination of the title itself now a matter for the play-offs rather than the group phase. But an unbeaten campaign is a rare achievement, and Baldasso's side have shown no inclination to ease off the accelerator in recent weeks, twelve goals against PFA Odin Sarawak the latest reminder of their intent.

Whatever the result, the final whistle in Shah Alam will bring the curtain down on the MPFL 2026 regular season and confirm the make-up of the top six ahead of the play-offs, with Selangor's position at the summit already beyond doubt and KL City's hold on fourth spot the last major detail still to be settled.
