USM and Terengganu finished first and second in division two last season, and they battled out a terrific match on Matchday Two as Terengganu held on for a hard earned three points with a 5-4 win.
The sides met in a friendly in April ahead of the new season and shared six goals in a closely contested match, and it was Terengganu, on their season debut, that took an early lead, Alif Mat Amin with their first goal back in the MPFL division one.
Both goalkeepers were kept busy, particularly USM's Ash Afif, who made several fine saves to keep Terengganu at bay, and his side got back on level terms when Zulikmal equalised.
But two goals towards the end of the half saw Terengganu lead three-one at the break, Alif Mat Amin with his second of the match and captain Syed Shahrul giving them a two-goal cushion.
Alif Mat Amin added a third early in the second half and then a fourth as it looked as though Terengganu would win comfortably.
But that goal cued a USM comeback. Ahmad Muazzim and Eikmal Daniel made it 5-3 before Eikmal spurned a glorious opportunity to make it 5-4, and that would prove costly.
USM did get another through Muazzim's second of the match with just seconds remaining, but there wasn't enough time to push for an equaliser.
Terengganu took all three points, but credit to USM for their comeback.
