The MPFL 2026 regular season finished with Selangor's perfect record intact, sixteen wins from sixteen matches and 48 points, but the play-off round is where the rest of the division's season is now decided. KL City finished fourth with 23 points, Terengganu fifth with 20, and the two sides meet knowing the winner goes straight into a semi-final against Selangor themselves. Lose this one, and the campaign ends here regardless of anything achieved across the previous nine circuits.

Both sides arrive with recent form pointing in opposite directions. KL City closed the regular season with back-to-back defeats, including a 1-3 loss to Selangor in the final round, extending a stop-start pattern that has followed them for much of the campaign under head coach Jerry Dinesh Pireira, whose comments about squad depth have proven a recurring theme all season. Terengganu, by contrast, arrive on the back of a 2-1 win over ATM in their own final match, a result built on the kind of direct, attacking approach that has produced 59 goals across the regular season, more than either KL City or ATM managed, even if a goals-against column of 70 tells its own story about the trade-off involved.

KL City's route through this tie is likely to run through the same senior figures who have carried them for most of the season, captain Dinesh Kumar and Daniel Almeida chief among them, alongside Muhammad Dodie's emergence as a reliable source of goals in the campaign's second half. Terengganu's own hopes rest heavily on Alif Mat Amin, whose goalscoring form has been one of the most consistent threads running through their season regardless of the results around him.

Whoever wins this tie inherits arguably the toughest assignment left in the competition, a semi-final against a Selangor side that has not lost, or even drawn, all season. Getting there is the only job in front of either side this weekend, and on the final month's form, it is not obviously clear which of the two arrives in better shape to do it.
