Circuit 8 gets underway with Pahang looking to keep up the pressure on the top two.
There is little suspense about where this fixture is likely to finish on paper. Pahang Rangers arrive third in the table, 21 points and a 77-goal difference clear of USM FC, who sit eighth having won only two of twelve matches this season. When these two sides met in Circuit 3, Pahang won 7-1, Rodrigo Da Silva scoring a hat-trick, and little in either club's form since suggests the gap has narrowed.
What makes the fixture worth watching regardless is what it says about USM's season beneath the results themselves. A university club whose first-team form has been genuinely difficult this year has, in the same period, sent two players, Amirul Syahmi and Danial Zhafirul, into Malaysia's senior national squad, and Danial Zhafirul's own scoring form, including a brace against JDT earlier in the campaign, has been one of the more encouraging threads running through an otherwise difficult debut season in the MPFL's unified top flight. A repeat of the heavy defeat suffered in June would say little new about USM's league position; a more competitive performance against a side of Pahang's quality would say considerably more about the progress USM's coaching staff believe the squad has made since.
For Pahang Rangers, the fixture is closer to a formality in table terms, sitting comfortably clear of both the automatic qualification places above them and the play-off scrap below, but it remains an opportunity for a strike partnership that has rarely gone quiet all season. Felipe De Souza and Rodrigo Da Silva have scored 41 goals between them in thirteen matches, and a side with as little to play for as Pahang Rangers do this particular weekend has, on this season's evidence, shown no obvious sign of easing off against weaker opposition when the chance to add to that tally presents itself.
The result, in isolation, is unlikely to move either side's position in the table. What it may do is offer another data point in USM's longer-term story, a young, development-focused club whose most meaningful progress this season has arguably been happening off the pitch as much as on it.
