Eloy Alonso - Making His Mark in the MPFL

When Pahang Rangers confirmed Eloy Alonso Fraile as their new head coach ahead of the Malaysia Premier Futsal League 2026 season, it was a case of a club reaching for international pedigree without tearing up what already worked.

The 45-year-old Spaniard, from León and known to some as "Leonés", arrived with a coaching career built on international experience rather than club silverware alone. He has spent time since 2022 on the coaching staff of the Thailand national team, helping the side to strong results across Asia and ASEAN, including a run to the Futsal World Cup. Before that, his understanding of the game was shaped from an unusual vantage point: as a goalkeeper in the Spanish Futsal League, a background he has credited with sharpening his tactical eye and his approach to player development.

Rather than remodel Pahang Rangers from the ground up, Alonso opted for continuity. The Tok Gajah made only two changes to the squad that had finished third the previous season, bringing in Syarifuddin Md Akhir from Kedah and Brazilian Rodrigo Da Silva to complete their import quota alongside long-serving forward Felipe De Souza, now the club's all-time leading scorer and into his third straight season as their focal point up front. Around them, Alonso has leaned on experienced figures such as Akmarulnizam Idris, Ahmad Harith and Razin Rahim to carry a squad he has described as a project blending senior know-how with emerging talent.

His stated aim was simple: a team with a winning mentality, unafraid of any opponent, and one that improves from match to match rather than season to season. That message has largely held up under early-season pressure. Pahang Rangers sit third in the 2026 table, level with expectations after a 3-5 loss to leaders Selangor, before Alonso's side responded immediately with a 5-2 win over PFA Odin Sarawak, a pattern of quick recoveries that has come to define his time in Kuantan.

Off the pitch, the club's modernisation under Alonso's arrival has matched the ambition on it. New partnerships with Sanwa Tours and Physio Hero, covering logistics and player welfare respectively, were signed as part of a wider push to professionalise the operation around the squad for the MPFL 2026 campaign.

With Pahang Rangers still chasing Selangor at the top, Alonso's side will look to close the gap as the season moves into its next circuits.
