The Malaysia Premier Futsal League started in 2004 as the national futsal league under the name Liga Futsal Kebangsaan. It was set up by the Football Association of Malaysia to organise club futsal in a proper league format and help the sport grow across the country.
In 2019, the league was rebranded as the Malaysia Premier Futsal League. The new look put men’s and women’s teams in a professional structure, with matches in Division 1 and Division 2. The system has since changed a few times, with different numbers of teams and different formats, but the aim has stayed the same: to give clubs a clear path and raise the quality of futsal in Malaysia.
Futsal in Malaysia began to expand in the 2000s, when the national football body formed futsal units and more futsal courts appeared in towns and cities. The country has also fielded a national futsal team for many years, reaching international tournaments and the FIFA Futsal World Cup once. Today, futsal is a fast-growing sport, with leagues, school competitions and state-level events helping clubs and players improve year after year.
