Preview: Wipers v USM
Wipers will still look to finish on a high with their first win, while USM can still mathematically make the play-offs.
Bottom plays second-bottom in Pasir Gudang on Sunday, and for one of these two sides, the play-off conversation is already closed. Wipers' 1 point from thirteen matches, allied to a fixture list that leaves them with no realistic route to the points ATM currently hold in sixth, means their play-off hopes are mathematically over regardless of what happens between now and the end of the season. That reality has shaped Wipers' campaign from the outset: a squad built explicitly around player development ahead of SUKMA 2026 and beyond, for whom minutes against senior professional opposition have always mattered more than the league position those minutes produce.
USM's own arithmetic is not quite so bleak, even if it is not far from it. A 0-2 defeat to Pahang Rangers earlier in this circuit leaves them on 7 points, five behind sixth-placed ATM with a small handful of matches still to play, a gap that remains open on paper but is unlikely to close in practice. What has mattered more for USM this season has arguably happened off the pitch, with Amirul Syahmi and Danial Zhafirul both selected for the senior national squad this year, and Danial Zhafirul's own scoring form, including a brace against JDT earlier in the campaign, offers the clearest individual thread to follow into this match regardless of the table.
The sides met in Circuit 4 when USM ran out winners by an 8-0 margin. Both squads have shown signs of growth in recent circuits, USM's battling 6-6 draw with Terengganu the clearest example, and a competitive match here would say more about the direction either club is heading than the eventual league placings will.
With the play-offs out of reach for Wipers, they will try and dent USM's slim hopes; Sunday's match is really about what each club can still take from the closing weeks of the season: for Wipers, further exposure for a young squad being built with a longer-term pathway in mind, and for USM, another chance to show that a difficult debut season in the MPFL's unified top flight is beginning to turn, however slowly, in the right direction.
